My Bio

Thin veneer of self-absorbed, thoughtless, geeky jerk layer that mistakes itself for a lasting self which is transformed into a generous, socially conscious teacher and friend by the boundless compassion and wisdom of Buddha-nature. Or, another way to say that is when you figure out that you can learn from everything and choose to be open to the possibilities even your mistakes can be turned into lessons for being a better person. Details? OK, lessee: went to college, got married, working to acquire a solid career path, expanding my perspective on the world via internet.

My Hobbies

Meeting people, reading, festivals/amusement parks/city parks, rat terriers, online communities, cooking, music (some alternative, some rock, a shot of new age/uncoventional instrumental/world music, a little classical, even less country, and a lot of jazz). You can visit with me at The Bodhi Tree or at my friend's yuku board Encephalon.

My Quotes

Really, things I have said (or more likely written and posted online)...

"Argghh--not my own words...*choke*...arghhh.. melting... agg" [11/08/2001]

My Poetry

A couple of short pieces I wrote long ago...

Twilight

The song floats freely on the breeze
playful and without a care
Eyes that smile have heard the tune
Urgency is far away
Hearts welcome tomorrow
yet are content with today
Dreams are waiting just beyond
to fill the sky with stars
The song serenades the setting sun
and shares the beauty of twilight

Tapestry of Life

Down in the lost pools of the deep
In the dark where hot flows seep
Stirring now and rearranging
By its nature always changing
Seeking feeling light pain pleasure
Using and growing with rhyme and in measure
Filling and flowing by trial and by error
Bringing awareness, joy, love, and terror
Beauty, truth, fear and dread
Brought to life by a common thread
Woven by novelty, union, and strife
To form the tapestry of life
There truly is no grander view
You are me, and I am you.

Words To Ponder

Were I to publish all of the quotes I find profound or inspirational here, the page would scroll endlessly. So this is a lamentably limited and inadequate selection, a troubling paucity of memorable statements...

Regarding Religion and Spirituality--

Someone may say, "Yes, I believe in Jesus." That's fine, but what is the point? Someone else may say, "Mohammed is the final prophet." That's fine, but what's the point? Share it with me! Someone else may say, "I follow the Buddha." Yeah, that's fine, you have the freedom to follow anything, but what is the point? What is the bottom line? What is the Buddha teaching us?

People are getting tired and disgusted with religion. One reason this is happening is because religion becomes very exclusive. People talk about loving thy neighbor but practice only loving their friends; they bitterly criticize others with beliefs differing from theirs. But if people would look at themselves and consider What can I do with my life? then followers of each religion could live up to the principles of their religion. Each religion has beautiful principles to share with others.
-Rev. Koshin Ogui, Zen Shin Talks (pp.219)

The more you can come to see everyone as yourself, the more you will be able to use everything around you to learn about who you are, and the more you will be able to transform yourself and be an ocassion for everyone else's transformation. We are all sentient beings, and we are all capable of experiencing one another's salvation.
-Michael Wenger from an article in Tricycle Magazine

Regarding Wisdom--

The only medicine for suffering, crime, and all the other woes of mankind, is wisdom.
-Thomas Huxley

Not to know at large of things remote
From use, obscure and subtle, but to know
That which before us lies in daily life,
Is the prime wisdom.
-John Milton

Regarding Truth--

Truth is born into this world only with pangs and tribulations, and every fresh truth is received unwillingly.
-Alfred Russel Wallace

Do not believe in anything (simply)
because you have heard it.
Do not believe in traditions because they
have been handed down for many generations.
Do not believe in anything because it is
spoken and rumoured by many.
Do not believe in anything (simply) because
it is found written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.
But after observation and analysis
when you find that anything agrees with reason
and is conductive to the good and benefit of one and all then accept it and live up to it.
-attributed to the historical Buddha in the Kalama Sutra

My Yuku Community

Welcome to the Bodhi Tree. If you are here to sit underneath a pipal tree in the hopes of recreating the awakening of the Buddha, you would better served chopping it down for fire wood. If instead you realize you are connected to the same source of wisdom and compassion to which the Buddha awoke, the revelation of the Hebrew prophets, the truth Christ preached, the source of insight for saints and mystics of many faiths -- the awareness of reality-as-It-Is -- then you are already under the Bodhi Tree wherever you are.

Lost or adrift? Seeking the experience of transcendent in the immanent? Searching for meaning in the madness of modernized living? Longing for a genuine connection to our common humanity? Don't just be a shallow consumer, trying to feed your needs with commercialism and the latest fad. Choose to be an active citizen of your society and the globe. Let's help each other wake up to our gifts and our responsibilities to our world.

  1. Learning to knit really blows

Well, I did 3-4 rows today at a bookstore after switching to bamboo needles. I had a few errors because I had trouble with the yarn bunching on the needle. Next I think I might stop my current project, which is a scarf with dark gray yarn and rows of 34 stitches, and just practice with light yarn doing 15 stitches per row.

Oh, and be wary of those generic kits from a hobby or craft shop. I did last night and it ("I Taught Myself Knitting") had these horrible drawings....

Bleah, even worse. Let wife cast on or whatever but now I am *really* frustrated, because since I didn't put it together myself I don't "get" how it works. It's just this complicated thing that is already half-done, and I am supposed to just jump in without skill or practice. I have no idea what I am doing, so I honestly don't get this idea that it is easier if someone "gets you started." It would be like someone showing you how to do surgery by making...
  3. Learning to knit really blows

Ugh, when we were in NC the wife had a chance to do a class at a yarn shop in Greensboro for beginning knitters and crocheters. She asked if I would volunteer for some practice, and I was lousy student. Very impatient and not liking when she wanted to reach in and "help". I initially couldn't even get the fist whatever it is around the hook without it falling apart. After I did that, she finished the first row, which she said was the hardest, then I practiced a few rows after...

Ahh, moving, writing a review, preparing for the fall for a new set of courses at a new school. Yup. Very busy!
